Famous for it’s glorious valleys and Stonehenge, the county of Wiltshire is a fantastic place to visit with your dog. Here are some of our favourite dog walks in Wiltshire including Castle Comb, Stourhead National Park and Heaven’s Gate.
Castle Comb
This village is extremely picturesque. It is said to be one of the most picturesque places in the UK. After exploring the village with your dog, you can go on the circular walk through the fields. This walk is relatively flat so older dogs will not struggle. There are also nearby streams where your dog will be able to explore. It is not too deep, and this is a place where many owners let their dogs roam, so your dog will definitely make friends here.
Stourhead National Park
This National park is very scenic. Your dog must be on a lead when near the gardens, but they can be let off once you have enjoyed looking around. There are various walks you can take. King Alfreds Tower or Turner Paddock are often quite popular. There is also a The Palladian Villa to admire and you can also walk along the meadows and woodlands.
There is a café for a quick snack after your walk and dogs are welcome any day apart except the 7th March to the 8th November when dogs are allowed every day after 2pm.
Ludgershall Castle
Dogs must be kept on a lead during this walk but it is worth the walk to see the Ludgershall Castle ruins. The surrounding area is a magnificent sight. After admiring the ruins, you can walk to Collingbourne wood. Here, there is a huge forest for your dog to explore. The forest is quite isolated so if you want to venture away from the crowd then this is a peaceful walk for you. In regard to a snack, you will have to head into Ludgershall where there are dog friendly pubs.
Heaven’s Gate
This woodland walk allows you to see the glorious views of the Longleat estate. There are various types of wildlife and scents for your dog to smell when venturing into the woodland. The stone sculptures are a great place to take a photo. Often people take a photo lying in the O shape sculpture. Once you get to the top of Prospect Hill you will have a panoramic view of all the countryside. If this walk is too easy for you then you can attempt Cley Hill, but this walk is quite difficult and you and your dog need to have a lot of energy to conquer this huge hill. In addition, The Bath Arms is nearby where they are dog friendly and they are known to be one of the best dog friendly pubs in Wiltshire!
Westbury Whitehorse
This is a great hilly walk for you and your dog. The key features here are; the view of the surrounding area and of course the Whitehorse itself. Great for a photo! The parking is free and there are both on lead and off lead areas for your dog. The on-lead areas will be the areas where there are free roaming sheep. There are also picnic areas nearby and people are often flying kites when it is windy. In the summertime, there is also an ice cream van so you may want to treat yourself and your dog with a cone.
