For a long time, we thought that dogs were carnivores, yet recent studies show that they have always eaten berries and other fruits, grazed grains and seeds and taken grass when they feel the need.

With so many people choosing a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle for themselves, it is little wonder that many dog treat manufacturers are producing vegetarian and vegan treats.  Those who previously did not mention their treats meat-free credentials are now shouting it out loud and proud.  Pet food manufacturers are also developing meat-free treats for our dogs.  This is great for pet guardians who don’t like the thought of handling meaty treats.  Meanwhile, some dogs even seem to prefer the meat-free options.

Whimzees Natural Dental Treats

From Paragon Pet Products, the Whimzees Dental Treat Range is a great way to help your dog keep their teeth in tip-top condition whilst enjoying a treat that they love.

They are free from gluten, artificial flavours and sugar. Whimzees chew sticks, dog dental chews, toothbrush and alligator shaped dental chews are all made from the same ingredients, which is 100% compounded vegetable fibres:

Potato Starch, Glycerin, Powdered Cellulose, Lecithin, Yeast, Colour, Malt Extract, Annatto Extract and Alfalfa Extract.

All shapes are designed to maximise chewing and to get in around the gums to give your dogs jaws and gums a workout.  This stimulates blood flow to the gums, helps to prevent bad breath and aids the removal of tartar and plaque from dog’s teeth.

These chews last up to three times longer than the leading dental chews and one a day helps your dogs teeth and gums stay healthy.

Blake especially loves these and they are tremendous value when bought as a variety box of 56 chews:

Benevo Rumble Strips

These rumble strips are soft and chewy milk flavoured treats made from GM-free wheat and maise cereals.  They are Vegetarian Society UK and Vegan Society UK approved.  They do contain sugars, preservatives and colours and undisclosed ingredients of vegetable origin, but crucially for some, they are egg and soya free.

The soft texture of the strips makes them easy to break into smaller pieces for training or for smaller dogs.  Dogs love them.

Jungle Calling Sweet Potato Strips

The Jungle Calling Sweet Potato Strips are made simply from dehydrated skinless sweet potato and no other ingredients. The strips are grain-free, gluten-free and contain no artificial ingredients or preservatives.  They are high in fibre, easy to digest and are a completely natural plant-based treat.

The size they come in is a little big for small dogs, but they can easily be cut into half or smaller pieces for smaller dogs to carry and chew. The single ingredient makes these strips a great option as a treat for dogs with sensitive tummies or allergies when you are investigating what is causing the upset.

Which One Will You Try?

Because dogs are omnivores, they do well on vegetarian and vegan dog treats.  Even if you have not embraced a vegetarian or vegan diet yourself, these treats are pocket friendly and pleasant to handle.  Whatever your motivation for trying vegetarian dog chews, they are popular with the dogs who try them. You may even be already using them without realising.
